John is the owner & head coach at Burley Strength. He has been coaching since 2011 and added the title of gym owner to his resume with the opening of Burley Strength in 2016.

John is passionate about strength and training for performance in all areas of life. John first stepped foot in a gym at age 14 to improve his performance on the Rugby Union field. After 10 years in the front row, he discovered the sport of powerlifting. The rest, as they say, is history.

Since 2010 John has competed as an athlete at a high level in both raw and equipped powerlifting with multiple national titles and national records including being 1 of only 2 athletes who’ve squatted 400kg+ in 2 separate weight classes. In the post-COVID world John’s shifted his training focus to endurance sports in the form of running and mountain biking.

After making the decision to turn his passion for training into a career John has spent the last 10 years refining his knowledge and skills to provide a comprehensive approach to training for athletes of all shapes and sizes. John prides himself on offering an inclusive service that welcomes anyone who’s willing to put in the work to pursue their goals.
